UK's first state-funded Hindu school gets new building Print E-mail

Meditation and yoga form part of the lessons.

1st February 2010
: Indians living in the UK, or believers in the tenets of Hinduism, can now look forward to teaching their little ones something about the religion in a whole new environment. For the first state-funded Hindu school in the UK has started its operation from a new building.

The Krishna Avanti Primary School was founded in 2008, but had spent its first year in borrowed classrooms in a neighbouring school. It moved on to new premises in September 2009 in Harrow, having the highest percentage of Hindus than any council in the UK.

Meditation and yoga will form part of the lessons. The school even has a temple at the centre of its premises; and is the first voluntary aided Hindu faith school in the country.

Dubbed as the most eco-friendly school, it is also Britain’s first vegetarian state institute. Children here study the national curriculum, and tend the garden, while learning concepts like equality of all living things.
