Can I switch from student dependant status to a student in my own right whilst in the UK? Print E-mail

Q. Can I switch from student dependant status to a student in my own right whilst in the UK?

A. Generally, no.

You usually need to have been last admitted to the United Kingdom in possession of a valid student entry clearance or valid prospective student entry clearance.

However, some people can switch whilst in the UK, if for example they are on a Sabbatical Officer visa or a Tier 2 visa but switching status to student visa category in-country is extremely limited and an individual would most likely apply for entry clearance from the British Embassy in their home country.
