Madonna booed during Romanian concert for support to Gypsies Print E-mail
The Queen of Pop booed during a concert in Bucarest, Romania.
"Discrimination against Romanis and gypsies makes me sad".

Bucharest, 26 August 2009 - Cheers turned to boos when Madonna spoke a few words in support of Eastern European gypsies during her concert in Bucharest.

"It's been brought to my attention that there has been a lot of discrimination against Romanis and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe and that makes me feel very sad," she said from the stage, accompanied by soft tzigani notes played by her gypsy musicians, who showed her their support.

"Because we don't believe in discrimination against anyone. We believe in freedom and in equal rights for everyone, right?"

The question prompted harsh boos and insults from the 60 thousand attending the show, drowning the second part of the soft spoken speech, which broadened to the rights of homosexuals.

The audience cooled down only after the music started again, with Madonna visibly embarrassed.

The speech sparked great controversy in Romanian media and on the Internet.

Madonna achieved her aim.
